We’ve stayed in many a countryside cottage over the past few years, and while many have been beautiful, memorable stays, we’ve yet to find one that ticked absolutely every box… until our luxurious self-catering stay at the Farndale Estate’s cottages in the North York Moors that is!

Farndale Estate Holiday Cottages are a collection of 12 stunning converted properties nestled in the heart of charming Farndale. It’s a picture perfect postcard setting with rolling hills, quaint bolt holes, the local pub The Feversham Arms Inn literally on the door step and the Farndale Village Hall directly opposite the cottage we stayed in.

The journey to Farndale was a scenic one and travelling in from Newcastle, we were pleasantly surprised that the Yorkshire Moors are really only 90 minutes away. Winding our way along the country roads dotted with sheep that come right up to the roadside and incredible scenery – the moors thick with pretty purple heather, we enjoyed the drive almost as much as our stay!

The cottages on Farndate Estate cater to all group sizes from the cosy Coach House, East View and The Byre which sleep two, right up to 12 bed houses like The Old Vicarage.

We stayed in the two bed East Steading cottage comfortably sleeping four, with West Steading (another four person cottage) located directly next door and accessible via the garden gate should you be booking both properties at the same time.

Our characterful abode with private parking and drive, offered up a luxurious five star experience, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, large garden area with seating and my favourite – the wonderfully rustic living room area with wood-burning stove, exposed stone walls and pitched ceiling complete with beautiful timber trusses.

With a self-catering property you want to have all the things you’d have at home in order to rustle up a good home cooked meal and East Steading’s kitchen did not disappoint. With dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave and fridge freezer as well as a washing machine and dryer in the separate utility room, we were able to cook up a glorious meal which we enjoyed by the blazing fire with a fancy bottle of red.

Our second night was spent at the friendly local pub – The Feversham Arms Inn where we got chatting to the owner Rachel straight away (although we’re sad to report she’s leaving soon after decades of running the pub!) Plentiful servings, good ale on tap, a beer garden and a very popular Sunday roast (they were sold out by the time we arrived late on Sunday afternoon,) make this a really fantastic pub to have close by.

Back in our cosy cottage, we spent the evenings playing chess (there’s a board game compendium) and watching TV in our super comfy king size bed with high quality sheets and fluffed up pillows. Our en-suite bathroom was also spacious and I was very happy to see Noble Isle toiletries are stocked throughout the cottage – from hand wash to shampoo, conditioner and body wash – they smell absolutely divine.

Of course, you can’t come to the North York Moors without indulging in a spot of walking and this particular area of Low Mill and Farndale is famous for its Daffodil trail. Running all the way along the River Dove, this splendid springtime sight is a real draw for those who love the great outdoors, and while there weren’t any to marvel out in early September, we followed the trail anyway, enjoying the scenery and the cows and sheep in the fields who were surprisingly friendly!

The Farndale Store is a 5 minute drive away, selling all manner of delicious Yorkshire treats, kitchen essentials and some really lovely trinkets and gifts. We had kindly been left a basket of goodies by the owners including fresh bread and the loveliest biscuits, but we headed to the farm shop to pick up sausage, bacon and ketchup for a big pre-hike breakfast! It’s the cutest little place and is definitely worth a visit if you’re staying in Farndale.

Beautiful accommodation, stunning scenery, walks for all levels of fitness and that wonderful village community feel have us absolutely smitten with Farndale.
