Lifehouse Hotel & Spa Review: An Essex Spa Escape Within Easy Reach From London
Lifehouse Hotel & Spa is the kind of spa you book when you desperately need to escape London, but don’t have the time (or energy) for a four-hour drive to the Cotswolds.
Tucked away in Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, it’s around 80 minutes by train from London, followed by a short walk or quick taxi from the station. If, like me, you don’t drive, that’s a huge selling point. You can leave your laptop behind, swap the Tube for the countryside and be in a fluffy robe before you’ve had chance to overthink whether you should’ve just stayed at home.
First Impressions
Lifehouse isn’t your typical grand country house hotel, and I actually think that’s part of its charm. It’s contemporary, understated and much more relaxed than some of the grand manor house spas you’ll find elsewhere.
The hotel sits within 130 acres of grounds, including 12 acres of Grade II listed gardens originally designed by Lady Byng of Thorpe Hall almost a century ago. Today they’re being lovingly restored, with lakes, winding pathways and seasonal planting making it feel far more secluded than you’d expect.
It’s also adults-only, which instantly creates a calmer atmosphere, and there are plenty of ways to visit, whether you’re after a spa day, treatment and lunch, afternoon tea or a full overnight stay.

Start With Lunch
Spa lunches can be hit or miss. They’re either so healthy you’re hungry again an hour later, or so heavy you immediately want a nap. Thankfully, Lifehouse gets the balance just right.
The restaurant serves Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes, with everything from pinsas and pasta to fresh salads, sandwiches and lighter plates. There’s also a gorgeous terrace if the sun decides to make an appearance (which, thankfully, it did for us).
We shared padrón peppers to start before I ordered the prawn paccheri pasta, which was exactly what I wanted before an afternoon in the spa. Fresh tomato sauce, juicy prawns and perfectly cooked pasta that felt indulgent without falling into food-coma territory.
In a rare moment of embracing wellness, we also skipped the wine and ordered mocktails instead. Mine was a ginger spritz-style drink that looked every bit as celebratory as a cocktail and made lunch feel like even more of a treat.

Don’t Skip The Grounds
Before heading into the spa, we wandered around the gardens. There are lakes, open lawns and peaceful walking trails that give you the chance to stretch your legs before entering full relaxation mode. We spotted ducks, geese and even a heron, which turned our stroll into a very low-effort wildlife safari.
It’s such a simple addition to the day, but it makes a real difference. Rather than moving straight from lunch to the pool, you actually get that feeling of switching off and leaving London behind.
The Spa
The spa itself isn’t enormous, but I actually liked that. Everything is contained and easy to find, so the day flows naturally rather than turning into one of those spa experiences where you’re wandering around in a robe trying to work out where the steam room is.
The main space has a large pool, jacuzzi, plunge pool, sauna, steam room and salt inhalation room, with plenty of loungers around the pool. It was lively enough to have a bit of atmosphere, but not so busy that we were hovering awkwardly waiting for somewhere to sit.
The salt inhalation room ended up being my favourite. It was warm, peaceful and one of those spaces where you instantly feel yourself slowing down.
There’s also a gym and a full timetable of fitness classes if you want to get active. Personally, I was committed to the pool-and-pasta itinerary, but yoga and other classes are available if you’re feeling more virtuous than I was.

The Temple Spa Facial
The highlight of the day was, without question, my Temple Spa facial.
My therapist, Poppy, was brilliant from the moment we met. Before we started, we chatted through my skincare routine, any concerns and what I wanted to get out of the treatment. I’d mentioned my skin had been feeling particularly dry, so she tailored parts of the facial towards hydration, which immediately made it feel much more personalised.
She also explained every stage before it happened, which I really appreciated because this isn’t a basic cleanse-and-moisturise facial. There are tools, massage techniques, masks and different products throughout, and knowing what was coming meant I could completely switch off.
The treatment itself was much more hands-on than I’d expected, but in the best possible way. It almost felt like someone had combined a deep tissue massage with a luxury facial, with plenty of lymphatic drainage across my jaw, cheekbones, neck and shoulders.
There were cooling gua sha-style tools, a vibrating cleansing brush and a foaming cleanser that honestly felt like someone had poured a bubble bath onto my face. Strange description, I know, but somehow incredibly relaxing.
The gold mask was probably my favourite part. Once it had been applied and left to set, there was no awkward lying in silence waiting for it to work. Instead, Poppy treated me to one of the best hand, arm and shoulder massages I’ve had in ages, which only added to the feeling that every part of the treatment had been properly thought through.
By the end, my skin looked brighter, my shoulders felt about three inches lower than when I’d walked in and I left feeling genuinely looked after.

Post-Spa Glow
After my treatment, I headed to the relaxation room, which is a dangerous place if you’re someone who falls asleep easily.
Soft lighting, quiet music, comfortable beds and people happily reading or snoozing under blankets. It would’ve been very easy to spend the rest of the afternoon there. I managed to drag myself away eventually, mainly because I wanted one last dip in the pool before heading home.
Would I go back?
Absolutely. Lifehouse Hotel & Spa isn’t trying to be the biggest or most extravagant spa in the country, and I think that’s exactly why it works so well.
It’s peaceful without feeling pretentious, easy to get to from London, serves genuinely good food and has beautiful grounds that make you feel miles away from city life.
What really stood out, though, was the team. Every single member of staff we met seemed genuinely invested in making everyone’s day feel as relaxing as possible, and that’s something you can’t fake.
We’ll definitely be back, and next time, I think we’ll turn it into a weekend rather than trying to squeeze it all into one day.
