Video game adaptations have a mixed track record, to say the least. Once upon a time, it was assumed that any video game movie would be schlocky and embarrassing, with films like Doom, Alone in the Dark and the original Super Mario Bros. moviesetting the bar very low. In recent years, video game adaptations have made a huge turnaround, with the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, The Last of Us, and the new Super Mario Bros. films winning over critics, audiences, or both.
