The ’80s were truly a wild time for kids’ movies. A number of up-and-coming filmmakers were pushing boundaries of what was appropriate for audiences of all ages, but funny enough, Steven Spielberg is almost single-handedly to blame for the creation of the PG-13 rating. In 1984, he directed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and produced Gremlins. Both of these movies featured unexpected violence and intensity that were ultimately deemed too graphic for children under 13, resulting in the MPA creating the new PG-13 rating.
