Friday the 13th may be one of the most storied horror franchises of all time, but it’s hardly known for its seamless logic and continuity. The original 1980 classic reveals Pamela Voorhees is the killer, enacting vengeance for her son’s death. Part 2 retcons Jason’s fate and make him the franchise’s masked Big Bad. The shift is one that’s come to be accepted as part of the slasher series’ charm, even if it creates an unweildly timeline and confused character backstory. Each movie seems to ignore the last, for good and ill.
