IWC Schaffhausen Takes the Ingenieur Into Tourbillon Territory

Since reimagining Gerald Genta’s 1976 Ingenieur SL integrated sports watch design in 2023 as the Ingenieur Automatic 40mm, IWC Schaffhausen has steadily diversified the collection through case sizes and materials, including unveiling a 35mm stainless-steel reference with a summery electric-blue dial just this July. On the technical front, the brand has also expanded the modern Ingenieur collection from its time-and-date beginnings to comprise a Kurt Klaus–developed perpetual calendar, and it now adds a second high-end mechanism to the mix.

Launched at Watches and Wonders Geneva this year, the Ingenieur Tourbillon 41 (Ref. IW345901) marks the entrance of a tourbillon, here presented in the novel pairing of an olive-green dial and a 5N gold case and bracelet. Composed of components that together weigh just 0.635g, the one-minute flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock features a stop-seconds mechanism for more precise time-setting, and the configuration is suspended from goldcoated bridges. Diamond Shell, created through chemical vapour deposition, coats the pallet lever and escape wheel to reduce friction and improve energy transmission.

Driving the system is the manufacture 82905 self-winding calibre, with a Pellaton bidirectional winding system that combines an eccentric cam and a pair of pawl arms to capture the energy from all movement of the oscillating weight with better isolation from shock. And through high-strength, low-friction zirconium oxide ceramic used for components tolerating high stress, such as the automatic wheel, clicks and rotor bearing, the system features superior wear resistance. The automatic bridge and rotor are enhanced with gold plating and Geneva stripes, while a solid-gold Probus Scafusia medallion can be found integrated into the oscillating mass.

In a limited run of 100, the Ingenieur Tourbillon 41 is one of only three currently available Ingenieur references crafted from this gold and copper alloy, which is satin-finished and polished to perfection on the case, bezel and bracelet. On the grid-patterned dial sit solid-gold hand-set appliques, surrounded by Superluminova-filled 5N gold indices and gold-plated hands.
