EU chief pitches ‘associate member’ status for Canada as both seek to pivot away from US
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, raised the possibility on Wednesday that Canada could become the first “associated member” of the European Union as she pitched closer colaboration with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney who was present at the the annual “State of the European Union” speech. Carney has been pursuing closer ties with the EU, as both seek to pivot away from the US.
