Emirates NBD Launches AI Travel Assistant with Visa and Tripadvisor
Emirates NBD has launched what it describes as the UAE’s first bank-led AI Travel Assistant, built in partnership with Visa and Tripadvisor. The conversational tool is accessible without a bank account or login, available free via the Emirates NBD website and a dedicated Tripadvisor domain, and is positioned by the bank as part of a broader shift towards ecosystem-led digital banking.

The platform lets users describe their preferences, budget and travel style in plain language, returning tailored itineraries, destination picks and local recommendations. It draws on Tripadvisor’s repository of more than one billion reviews and eight million listings, with what the partners describe as enhanced customisation across the 15 destinations most popular among UAE travellers. Relevant Visa cardholder perks, including hotel discounts and car rental offers, surface dynamically within the conversation.
Rohit Garg, group head of retail products and chief digital officer of retail banking and wealth management at Emirates NBD, said: “By combining cutting-edge AI with world-class insights from our partners, we are empowering travellers with innovative and personalised digital experiences that simplifies the process for our customers around one of their biggest passion points.”
Strategic context
The product is framed internally as a lifestyle extension rather than a transactional banking feature, reflecting a pattern seen across Gulf and South-East Asian retail banks where the battle for primary customer relationships is increasingly fought through non-financial engagement. Emirates NBD points to internal data showing the average UAE resident plans seven trips annually and can spend up to three months researching a single trip, an observation consistent with the broader fragmentation of the online travel market following the retreat of several all-in-one itinerary platforms.
The open-access design, requiring neither an Emirates NBD account nor a Visa card to use the basic tool, is commercially notable. It widens the top of the acquisition funnel at the cost of diluting the product’s exclusivity as a cardholder benefit. The Visa offer integration provides a reason for cardholders to prefer it, but the underlying travel content is freely available to anyone, which limits lock-in. How Emirates NBD measures conversion from travel planning to card spend or account opening will be the real test of commercial viability.
Market and competitive landscape
Several large retail banks and card networks have moved into AI-assisted travel planning over the past 18 months, typically by embedding large language model interfaces into existing reward or concierge products. Mastercard, American Express and a number of European neobanks have announced or deployed comparable features, making the “first bank-led” positioning primarily a regional rather than a global claim. The UAE’s digital banking environment, shaped by the Central Bank of the UAE‘s open-finance roadmap and a high smartphone penetration rate, is a credible testbed for lifestyle banking products, and Emirates NBD’s scale across 13 countries and 25 million active customers gives it distribution leverage that smaller challengers lack.
For Tripadvisor, the partnership represents a distribution deal as much as a product collaboration. The platform has faced sustained pressure from AI-native travel search tools and Google’s own integrated travel features; embedding its review graph inside a bank’s customer journey offers a defensible distribution channel outside the direct-to-consumer search funnel.
The tool is available in English at launch. Expansion to Arabic, the primary language of a substantial share of the bank’s customer base, is an obvious next step that the release did not address, nor did it provide any adoption targets or metrics against which to judge the rollout’s success.
