Premiering in 1989, the original Baywatchwould go on to become a worldwide sensation. The show premiered at the end of a decade full of similar programs, as the ’70s and ’80s gave us shows like Miami Vice, Charlie’s Angels, and CHiPs, delivering a blend of drama, mystery, and action in unique settings. What Baywatch’s predecessors didn’t have, though, is attractive people regularly running around in slow motion. It’s not that shows that came before it didn’t have attractive stars or sex appeal, but with Baywatch being intrinsically linked to the beach, it required virtually every actor in the show, from core cast member to guest star, to show some skin.
