While horror movies from major studios like Primate, Scream 7, and Lee Cronin’s The Mummy all scored an underwhelming reception earlier in 2026, it’s been an otherwise big year for indie horror. Projects like Hokum, Leviticus, and Obsession have all fared much better with audiences and critics, proving that a gripping story is more important than big budgets or famous faces. Another major hit in horror this year was A24’s Backrooms by filmmaker Kane Parsons.
