Autonomous Vessel Manufacturer Commits $3.2 Billion to Texas Shipyard

Saronic Technologies chose Cameron County, Texas over California for Port Alpha, a $3.2 billion shipyard designed to manufacture autonomous naval vessels. CEO Dino Mavrookas announced the decision alongside Governor Greg Abbott on July 16, ending a multi-state site selection that included locations in California, Washington, Oregon, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Cameron County approved a $2.7 billion incentives package, and the local school district granted $517 million in tax breaks through 2034. Saronic plans to break ground this year and bring the facility online in 2028.

Port Alpha will span 835 acres initially, with potential expansion to nearly 4,400 acres in later phases. Mavrookas said the project will create 10,000 jobs and generate $160 billion in economic impact for the Brownsville region over the next decade. The facility is designed to produce ships at a speed and scale not seen since World War II, eventually building 20 times more vessels than current U.S. capacity. Saronic’s autonomous drone boats have been deployed in combat operations and rescue missions, including a recent strike on an Iranian naval base and the rescue of U.S. Apache helicopter pilots near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Austin-based company raised $1.75 billion in a March series D round at a $9.25 billion valuation, making it one of Texas’s most valuable startups. Saronic already operates a 413,388-square-foot production facility in Austin and acquired a 100-acre Louisiana shipyard last year. The Port Alpha announcement aligns with a broader surge in defense technology investment, including nearly $10 billion in defense projects announced by President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania the day before Saronic’s reveal. The administration is pushing to increase the defense budget to $1.5 trillion in the next fiscal year, creating tailwinds for defense-focused industrial real estate projects.
