If there’s one king of modern fantasy, it’s Brandon Sanderson. Few writers have made complicated magic systems feel this accessible. Sanderson’s best fantasy books have rules, limitations, loopholes, and enough breathing room for characters to get creative. The text is so immersive that you start thinking about what you would do with the magic. That’s also why The Stormlight Archive has such a devoted following. With a TV series now being developed on Apple TV, the world of Knights Radiant and Surgebinding could become the next fantasy adaptation everyone is talking about.
