World War II has been the subject of more movies and TV shows than any other historical event, and for good reason. It’s got everything a writer’s room could want, from impossible moral stakes and doomed heroism to enough documented firsthand testimony to build multiple scripts. But a film or series that is “based on a true story” and one that is “historically accurate” are two very different promises. Only a handful of WWII shows have actually earned the second one from the people whose job it is to notice when Hollywood gets it wrong.
