Team GB Olympic gold medallist makes multi-million-pound CBD investment

Team GB Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones is investing in a CBD firm

Team GB Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones has announced a multi-million-pound investment in a UK wellness brand.

Her firm, JJ Double Gold, will invest in York-based CBD business HempWell Ltd over the next three years, Jones having started her own brand in July.

She said: “HempWell has a wealth of expertise in this area, and I’m excited to be part of the journey and help take the business to the next level.” The firm will leverage expertise in AI and technology to grow the business, HempWell said.

Welsh athlete Jones, nicknamed the Headhunter, won Team GB’s first Olympic medal in taekwondo at the London 2012 Games before retaining her title four years later in Rio de Janeiro.

She has since appeared on the likes of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, The Jump and A League of Their Own.

HempWell’s Lisa McWilliams said: “This is a hugely significant milestone for HempWell and one that marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

“We’ve built a strong, trusted brand and a loyal customer base, and this investment gives us the opportunity to take that success to the next level.”

Jones, according to the firm’s website, remains an ambassador for Supreme CBD, which has been rapped a number of times by the Advertising Standards Authority over claims made in adverts on social media.

JJ Double Gold, which counts Jones as one of its three directors alongside a co-founder – tech entrepreneur Richard Groves – and Andrew Thomas, is yet to publish its latest confirmation statement, with Companies House marking its status as overdue. Its inaugural set of accounts are due by July.

The UK’s legal hemp and CBD sector is one of the largest in Europe with a market closing in on £1bn in value. A number of CBD drinks can be purchased in shops, while oils and edibles make up a fair chunk of the wider market.
