3D Construction Printing Company Lands $1.4 Billion Valuation With Dual-Use Strategy

Icon Technology Inc. closed a $200 million series D funding round on October 13, co-led by Baillie Gifford and BlackRock-managed funds. The round values the Austin-based 3D construction printing company at $1.4 billion. Other investors included Capital Factory, Moonshots Capital, Overmatch, The Syndicate, CAZ Investments, Moderne Ventures, Norwest, and Tiger Global. Co-founder and CEO Jason Ballard said the valuation represents a healthy increase from the prior round and carries weight given it was set by two of the world’s largest investment firms.

Icon operates three business units: Build, which designs and constructs housing; Prime, which focuses on government and military contracts; and Tech, which handles software and R&D. All three units are profitable, and Ballard said the company is on track to roughly quadruple revenue this year. Icon has built about 270 structures to date, a third of which were for social housing projects including Community First! Village in Austin. The company recently launched Titan, a multi-story robotic construction system that sells for nearly $900,000 and requires a $5,000 reservation deposit. Ballard said reservations are running at ten times the company’s production capacity for next year.

Icon currently manufactures two to three Titan printers per month from its Austin factory and expects to outgrow that capacity by 2028. The company employs about 300 people and plans to grow to over 1,000 within a few years, with the Austin footprint expected to more than double in two years. Icon is also advancing toward potential NASA contracts for lunar construction through its Artemis program work, developing printers that could use moon regolith and ice to build structures. The company has passed NASA thermal vacuum chamber tests and conducted a Blue Origin space flight test using actual moon dust.

Ballard said development work for lunar construction has informed Icon’s terrestrial products, with the Titan printer sharing the same form factor as the lunar Olympus printer and using software originally developed for moon applications. Icon remains committed to social housing projects despite investor pressure, with Ballard describing a Robin Hood strategy where high-end, scale, and government work mature the technology for application to those most in need of dignified housing. The company expects revenue to at least double again next year across both Build and Prime business units.
