Continuing a long run of releases for live-action Disney remakes over the last decade, the industry giant added to that list with Moana in Jul. 2026. This film delivered a near-identical replication of the original animated movie from 2016, bringing back Dwayne Johnson to reprise his role as the demigod Maui and introducing 19-year-old Catherine Laga’aia to take over the role of Moana from Auli’i Cravalho. Also starring Rena Owen, John Tui, and Jermaine Clement, the film retold the story of Moana’s journey alongside Maui to restore the heart of Te Fiti, saving the island of Motunui and her people.
