After a record-breaking run, HBO Max’s biggest and best sci-fi thriller in years is still a global streaming sensation, even after its final episode. When James Gunn took over DC Studios, he promised that the DCU would move in a fresh direction after the Zack Snyder years. 2025’s Superman was very much a James Gunn movie (it literally felt like Guardians of the Galaxy with a different coat of paint), and Supergirl crashed and burned in theaters. But the DCU’s first proper TV series has been a roaring success. The HBO label wasn’t just a marketing trick; the series was a prestige TV show that just happened to feature superheroes.
