If Birdman and Megalopolis shared a child, it might end up something like Digger. Alejandro González Iñárritu brings the cascading, rambunctious intensity he’s known for, and Tom Cruise delivers an unhinged presence not unlike Michael Keaton’s in Birdman. But there’s something bigger here; there’s more at stake: a multi-layered epic that can’t seem to decide if it’s a satire, a drama, or something far more meta and self-aware. Maybe it’s all at once, which begs the question of whether it can be, and if this internal clash strengthens it or serves as its downfall.
