Summa Tech Adds AML Checks to Onboarder Client Onboarding Platform
Summa Tech has embedded anti-money laundering checks directly into its cloud-based Onboarder platform, removing the need for smaller accountancy firms to run a second system alongside their existing onboarding workflow. The feature, built in partnership with identity-verification provider SmartSearch, went live this month.

The integration consolidates the client onboarding sequence into a single workflow. According to the company, the platform now handles letters of engagement, e-signing, know-your-customer checks, risk assessment and AML verification in one place. Nathan Keeley, chief executive of Summa Tech, said the AML check was the one part of the process that firms still had to manage outside the platform, and that the new feature closes that gap using SmartSearch’s established technology.
The operational case for consolidation
The pain point Summa Tech is addressing is real and widely recognised in the compliance-technology sector. Many smaller professional services firms, particularly accountancy practices, have historically stitched together separate tools for onboarding paperwork and AML verification because no single affordable product covered both. The friction is commercial as well as operational: duplicate data entry, mismatched audit trails and additional subscription costs accumulate quickly across a practice with a steady flow of new clients.
Onboarder is positioned explicitly for smaller firms, a segment that has often found enterprise compliance software either too expensive or too complex to implement without dedicated compliance staff. That positioning matters in regulatory terms too. Under the UK’s Money Laundering Regulations, which implement the Fourth and Fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directives, accountancy firms are designated as supervised entities and are required to conduct customer due diligence on new clients. The Financial Conduct Authority and the professional body supervisors, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, have continued to signal that smaller supervised firms must improve their AML processes. A product that lowers the cost and complexity of compliance for that segment addresses a genuine regulatory pressure point.
Market context
The compliance-software market serving small and mid-sized professional services firms is growing but remains fragmented. Several established providers offer AML and KYC tooling as standalone products, while a number of newer regtech platforms are building consolidated onboarding suites similar to what Summa Tech describes. The competitive question is whether SmartSearch’s underlying technology and Summa Tech’s onboarding workflow together produce a package that is meaningfully easier to implement than piecing together separate point solutions.
Summa Tech did not disclose pricing, customer numbers or the commercial terms of its partnership with SmartSearch. The free concierge sign-up service suggests the company is prioritising adoption over upfront revenue in the near term, which is a reasonable approach for a product still building its installed base in a segment where switching costs are low and word-of-mouth within professional networks carries weight.
The next milestones to watch are whether Summa Tech secures endorsement from any of the professional body supervisors, names reference customers from among the accountancy firms using the platform, and provides any data on time saved or compliance outcomes achieved through the consolidated workflow.
