Owner Commits $650 Million to Transform Stadium Into Convention Magnet

David Tepper increased his contribution to the Bank of America Stadium redevelopment to $650 million, matching the city of Charlotte’s funding and bringing the total project cost to $1.3 billion. Work began this summer on the 30-year-old facility and will continue through 2030. The project includes all new seating, modernized concessions and restrooms, updated audio and video systems, and a redesigned exterior. Two companion projects round out the development: a 100,000-square-foot indoor football training center scheduled to open in 2027 and a 4,400-capacity indoor music venue opening in 2029.

Tepper framed the redevelopment as a broader economic play for Charlotte’s convention and events industry rather than solely a sports facility upgrade. The renovated stadium, indoor practice facility, and music venue will provide spaces Charlotte has lacked when competing for major conferences and shows against larger markets. Steve Bagwell, CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, said the investments “give people more reasons to come to Charlotte” and create economic impact beyond the venues. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the improvements make Charlotte a strong candidate to host a future NFL Draft, an event that draws combined crowds of 200,000 to 800,000 over three days. Tepper Sports also plans to bid for matches as part of the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Bank of America Stadium hosted 47 events in 2025, up from 15 when Tepper bought the Carolina Panthers and the facility in 2018. This year the venue will stage around 50 events, including eight concerts. According to STR, nearly all top-selling dates for hotels in uptown Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have occurred in recent years, almost always aligned with major events at the stadium. The renovation will proceed while the NFL Panthers and Charlotte FC continue full home schedules, along with college football games and select concerts through 2030. Construction crews will work 24-hour shifts except on game and event days, with as many as 1,500 workers on site.

Tepper Sports negotiated the redevelopment framework with Charlotte City Council in June 2024, initially committing $150 million while the city would provide $650 million. Tepper later decided to match the city’s contribution and absorb all cost overruns. The agreement extends the Panthers’ and Charlotte FC’s commitment to the stadium through 2045, adding 20 years to the previous lease. Sports business consultant Marc Ganis told the Charlotte Business Journal that Tepper’s increased investment signals a long-term commitment to the venue and suggests he concluded the existing stadium was well-built enough to renovate rather than replace. The revamped facility will offer more diverse seating products at various price points, including a new upper-level social patio overlooking the field and uptown skyline.
