French filmmaker Luc Besson has always been a master of high-octane spectacle, but his contribution to sci-fi ultimately cemented his legacy as a visionary of the surreal. He first proved his genre credentials by exploring the monochrome wasteland of The Last Battle, before completely redefining futuristic aesthetics fourteen years later with the neon-drenched universe of The Fifth Element. He later expanded his cosmic canvas with the sleek, high-velocity thriller Lucy and the maximalist space opera Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, but after that, he stepped away from the grand scale of sci-fi worldbuilding for the best part of a decade. However, all that is about to change, as he is plotting a “crazy” return.
