While the sequel remains in development limbo, Jake Gyllenhaal’s 2024 action thriller hit is making an unexpected comeback on streaming. Jake Gyllenhaal is on something of an action streak. After making his MCU debut as Mysterio in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, the actor has leaned more heavily towards the action genre. Michael Bay’s Ambulance was released in 2022, followed by Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant in 2023. While neither broke box office records, they were moderately well received by audiences and have each gained a life of their own on streaming. He recently reunited with Guy Ritchie, alongside Henry Cavill, for In the Grey, which, again, fared better on streaming than it did in theaters. But in 2024, Gyllenhaal delivered an unexpectedly good remake of an ’80s action classic, and it’s punching its way up the streaming charts once again.
