Television these days isn’t exactly shy about gore and violence, but only a handful of shows have made those things central to their identity. Game of Thrones made graphic content a defining part of its appeal for much of a decade, while Spartacus pushed even further and wore that excess proudly. Interestingly, one show that arguably outlasted either of them in that space was never really sold as a provocation, but instead as a romance.
